Let's put things together and count how many!

Imagine you have some mangoes in a basket, and then more mangoes come.

Adding means putting groups together to find the total. Here are three mangoes. Let's count them one by one. Now two more mangoes join them. We have three plus two.
- Add = put together
Count them all: one, two, three, four, five. Three plus two makes five!
3+2=5Counters help too. Three red counters and two blue counters sit in the frame. The frame shows five counters in all. Same answer again! Let's try with birds. Four birds sit on a branch, and one more flies in.

Four apples plus one apple. Let's count them together. Four plus one makes five. You can also use your fingers to add!
4+1=5

Here is a neat trick. Two plus three is the same as three plus two.
Let's plot how the total grows when we add one more each time.
Your turn! Two ducks plus two ducks. How many ducks are there? Pick the right answer. Adding means putting groups together and counting them all to find the total.
